Translation of texts is a very good way to earn money, and not only for certified linguists, but also for people who simply know foreign languages well. Also, a translator’s high level of computer literacy and proficiency in office software such as MS Word, Excel, ABBYY Fine Reader, etc. and automated translation systems like Trados or similar tools are very much appreciated by the clients.

As for foreign languages from and into which translations are in demand, English, which is accepted worldwide as the language of international communication, is undoubtedly in the first place. There are more English-speaking translators than any other in this profession, so there is more competition in this segment. This doesn’t mean, however, that no good translator is out of work. There is always a demand for specialized translations, which can only be properly performed by people versed in a particular field of activity: law, various sciences, industries and so on.

Translations from or into eastern languages as well as specialist translations into other more difficult or less common languages are of course more expensive. And this market is “breathing” much better than where the experts in common languages “crowd in”.     

How much does an experienced translator earn?

The cost of an experienced translator can be different, and about the average price in this case, it is difficult to talk. One can only say that general texts are cheaper than time-consuming and specialist translations of scientific, technical or legal texts. Translation of literary works, films and TV series is also priced individually, depending on the translator’s skill and talent. 

Where can you earn money as a translator?

You can either work as a translator in a translation agency or as a freelance translator in freelance services, or you can offer your services on social networks or other specialized online services. Exchanges are a very good option for beginners, e.g. students, to earn extra money and build up a portfolio. Over time, however, it is advisable to establish a relationship with one or more regular customers. This will allow you to concentrate on your main work without getting distracted by looking for new clients.

Paradoxically, translation work can also be done while you are learning a foreign language. For example, you can bring to life translations made with Google Translate, which in their “raw” form are very imperfect and sometimes contain a lot of mistakes. Such work will allow you to earn a little money and improve your language skills.
